Ford Transit vs. Sprinter vs. ProMaster for a camper build

Why the Transit wins on service network and AWD price, and where the ProMaster's flat walls still beat it.

The Ford Transit high roof gives 81.5 inches of interior standing height on the 148-inch wheelbase — enough for almost anyone to stand upright without a raised roof. Parts and service are available at any Ford dealer in North America, which matters more than spec sheets once you are three states from home.

The Transit's AWD option is the cheapest all-wheel-drive cargo platform on the market, typically $5,000–$8,000 less than a comparable 4x4 Sprinter, and it uses ordinary gas rather than diesel plus DEF.

The trade-off is width. The ProMaster's straight walls let a six-foot person sleep sideways without modification; in a Transit you either sleep lengthwise or add wheel-well flares. Budget $1,700 plus install if a sideways bed matters to you.

For most DIY builders the decision comes down to this: choose the Transit for serviceability, resale, and AWD value; choose the ProMaster if you want the simplest possible cabinetry geometry; choose the Sprinter only if you specifically need diesel range or a factory 4x4 with an aftermarket ecosystem to match.
